Phil Hill Grand Prix Racing Driver
Phil Hill, born in Miami Florida in 1977, became America's first Formula One World Champion in 1961.
That year a new 1.5 litre formula was introduced and Ferrari contested the championship with their new 156 'sharknose'. The team claimed five victories out of eight races of the season including the spectacular Ferrari 1-2-3-4 finish in the Belgium Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps with Phil Hill driving the winning car from pole position.
The World Championship battle that season was fought between Phil Hill and teammate Wolfgang von Tripp but Hill's three victories provided him the winning margin.
Ferrari's successful season was marred by the tragic death of Wolfgang von Tripp following an accident during the penultimate race of the season at Monza.
